24 years ago, Lutheran Family Services of the Piedmont realized women refugees weren’t coming to class. They were at home, many of them in roles as caretakers of children, elders, neighborhood kids.
In response, they developed a program of offering classes through Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) with free childcare.
Women refugees returned to class.
12 years ago, Luthern Family Services left the Triad, and New Arrivals Institute was born as a non-profit.
Today, empowering women refugees and immigrants remains a core value of New Arrivals Institute. They continue to offer classes; childcare remains free.
